10 Winter Hair Care Tips

Fall is almost officially here! Let's get ready to adjust those regimens to maintain moisture in that lovely African American hair. Here is an article that I hope you find beneficial to your hair regimen.

Winter hair care is needed to help prevent problems caused by dry, cold weather. Depending on your location, cold weather can pose a problem for African American hair. Prevent setbacks due to cold weather and improper care with these winter hair care tips.

The chilling wind can quickly discourage even the most avid DIYer to think twice before she washes her hair. Although you may be uncomfortable, you cannot get sick from going outside with wet hair.

And just for information... We get sick because the viruses we are exposed to enter our bodies through the eyes, mouth, and nose. Blood vessels in the nose constrict in the cold, making it harder to fend off viruses. These viruses spread through mucus and saliva, not through wet hair and scalp.

Now that we've settled that, let's get to those winter hair care tips.

1. Protect your hair from wind
The wind is not your friend. Well, not exactly. But high, chilling winds can tangle your hair very quickly. Protect it with a hat or scarf. This prevents tangling that can lead to breakage. It will also keep your style in tact.
2. Line hats with satin or silk
Some hats do not come with linings and those can pull out strands of hair as you manipulate the hat. These types of hats can also absorb moisture from your hair which your hair definitely needs it cold, dry weather.
3. Don't be afraid to wash your hair
If your climate is dry and cold, your hair will be begging for moisture. If need be, adjust your schedule to allow your hair time to dry before going out.
4. Turn the temperature down
I know the bathroom floor is cold, but pumping up the temperature of your shower water will dry out your hair and skin. Remember what we talked about when the cuticle gets exposed to too much heat? Porous hair will soon follow with regular exposure.
5. Try a "no poo" regimen
Try using only conditioner to wash your hair. I suggest doing this about twice a week as conditioners do not contain the detergents needed to deep clean.
If you are like me and prefer to use a shampoo, opt for a natural, sulfate-free shampoo like Jane Carter Solutions Moisture Nourishing Shampoo. This shampoo packs a punch and cleans just as well, if not better, than sulfate shampoos.
6. Protective styling
During cold weather, you are most likely wearing heavy coats and/or scarves. Make sure to keep those delicate ends protected from the harsh material of your clothing my pinning them up.
7. Adjust your stash
Rich deep conditioners, natural oils, moisturizing shampoos, and hair masques are great choices to rotate through when caring for African American hair in the winter.
8. Use no-heat styling
Don't let the cold be an excuse to break out your flat iron and blow dryer too frequently! Use roller sets and air dry styles to keep your hair healthy during the winter months.
9. Cold water rinses
A quick blast of cool water when doing your last rinse temporarily lays the cuticle flat helping to seal in moisture.
10. Humidify your home
Use a humidifier to pump moisture back into your home or office. I have one that helps me greatly. Trust me, your hair, skin, and body will thank you.
These 10 winter hair care tips will help keep your hair in great shape.
