Length vs. Health

Many people say this mantra, but fewer live by it. In the online hair care community, I've run across many ladies who refuse to acknowledge their hair would be best benefited with a good trim (or cut), and a clean slate. Matter of fact, I was one of those women.

I understand how hard it is to be faced with the possibility of cutting off months of progress in 5 minutes. I can understand how the dream of long hair can be deterred. However, at what lengths would you go to make your ultimate length? Or is a healthy head of hair your goal with length being a bonus?

I found that protective styling was beneficial to me at a certain length and while my hair was recovering from damage. However, I enjoy different styles that aren't always protective now that my hair is shoulder length. I'm not willing to wear buns, and braids and whatnot for the next three years. I want to enjoy my hair. I'm also not a wig or weave wearer so I'm left to deal with my own hair. So I ask you....Are months or even years of protective styling at the cost of your confidence and sexiness worth the ultimate goal of length? **Note: This only applies to those who protective style but don't like to.

Let's chop it up.

This article is so right on time. I am actually going through this right now. My goal length is 2" below BSL (which is 10" from my shoulders). Back in August I had to cut my hair from BSL to APL because of winter damage. My hair is now back to BSL (thanks to OCT & and protective styling). I am starting to hate the styles because I've worn them for so long, but with only two more inches to go to meet my goal, I would say it is defintely worth it. It helped that my protective period was during the winter when I don't feel sexy anyway...LOL. It would have been much harder to do during summer.

Great article! I'm guilty as charged!!

GET OUTTA MY HEAD! OMG Eryn I feel like you are reading my mind. Ive been protective styling now for about a year...reason being I started a grueling workout regimen that doesnt seem to fair well w/my hair. And Im at a point now where I am SO sacrficing my confidence and my sexy. I dont necessarily have any goal length in mind. I am toying w/going natural (again). I get lots of compliments on my half wigs, but I still feel like I cant be me--if that makes sense. Im at a point where I want something new...something else. I just have to figure out what that exactly is. I guess Im bored w/the half wigs. If I were brave I'd BC. A weave or braids may be in my future.
Great blog!!!!

I completely understand this. There was time for me when I felt there is no point to my hhj if I'll never get to enjoy it. Now since my hair has gotten longer and I've snipped it more now than I ever did before my hhj I don't really like wearing it down. Of course I like to swing it around for my hubby but at the length it isfor me it gets on my nerves. I have to worry about it getting tangled in my purse strap, the seat belt, my stethoscope. So until I see my goal length chances are I'll probably keep it up. P-styling is nothing new for me though, so I can say that I've been on both sides. I like wearing my hair down sometimes, but the styling required for straight styles is so tedious being that airdrying and p-styling don't require much time. I've gotten lazy when it comes to styling.
