Tangerine (Aveda) Salon & Spa Review

During my entire appointment, everything was on time. My time as a client was respected and I respected the stylist's time by arriving 15 minutes early.

I was greeted by an assistant who asked me about what I wanted and had I been there before. Since I hadn't, she said I'll be getting a consultation with my stylist, Janet, first. She gave me magazines, massaged my scalp, and a cup of water. By the way, I was the only person of darker skin persuasion in that piece. I didn't feel uncomfortable and they weren't paying any attention to me anyway.

Janet, was already waiting for me and escorted me to her chair. She asked about what I wanted while assessing my hair which was a mess. I told her my hair history, current issues, and what I wanted. I showed her three photos of Eva Mendes for the layers I wanted. I expressed I wanted to keep as much of my overall length as possible, so we chose the best one for what I wanted and could achieve.

Janet took pieces of my hair and showed me exactly how much she'd have to cut for the style all over. She explained how it would look on me as opposed to the picture. I felt confident that I would not have any suprises. She began to smooth my hair with a fine tooth comb and began cutting. She said that she actually won't have to cut as much as she thought, but I will lose length at the top because of the layers. Cool. During the cut, she referred back to the picture to make sure everything was good. I liked that.

She recommended I stop relaxing and go straight via Keratin Complex treatment. She also said that switching relaxer brands and relaxing with store bought relaxers are bad and I should stick to one salon brand relaxer if I choose to keep relaxing. She reiterated that I should stretch a while before my next relaxer. If my hair is still breaking, don't relax until it's under control.

After the cut, I was shampooed, treated, and conditioned with Aveda Smooth Infusion shampoo, Damage Remedy Reconstructor, and Smooth Infusion conditioner respectively. I'd told her since using protein lately, my hair rebuked it, but she assured me this product would help with moisture retention and breakage. She was right. She also said this is not to be used as a consistent treatment. She said to use it for once a week for a month or so and stop until needed again to avoid protein buildup and subsequent breakage.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener serum was applied to my hair very lightly and detangled with a fine tooth comb. Yikes! But there was no significant hair loss or ripping at all. Soon the comb was gliding through my hair whereas I have been fighting pulling out globs of hair with a wide tooth comb at home...wtfudgecake!

Anyway, Janet said flat ironing should be a last resort and that a rollerset would be sufficient even for my severely underprocessed roots. She set my hair on various sizes of small rollers under 1.5" on very small sections to smooth the roots. After I was dry, her assistant removed my rollers and smoothed my hair lightly with a flat iron, at my request. She placed the temperature on the lowest it would go and smoothed my hair easily.

After, I was escorted back to Janet who asked me if I like my hair or if there was anything I want her to change. What! You mean that you would stop what you're doing to make sure I'm 100% satisfied? Wow...never had that happen...ever. She, again, recommended I let go of relaxing and consider Keratin Complex, at least a while and that I can still have healthy straight hair.  She offered to maintain the style and said it should grow out well with my hair.

I am very pleased with my experience and suprised at the advice I got from this stylist who is white. She seemed to understand African American hair very well. It was also impressive that she prefers natural hair when I thought she'd balk at it. She admits that she's not comfortable enough to perform relaxers and referred me to someone else at a sister salon. She wasn't appalled at my hair or comment anything about it being unamaneageble. She was friendly and professional. She addressed all of my concerns with my hair and did not shove products down my throat. I purchased travel sizes on my own free will.

Wow! Janet is my dream stylist. I love that she was so knowlegeable and attentive. I'm going to research that Keratin Complex...sounds interesting.

Wow!!! Such a wonderful experience. Good for you-she's my dream stylist too. I'm really hoping to find somebody like her soon. I've enjoyed growing my hair out on my own, but I'm just ready to start researching and hopefully will find my "Janet" soon!!

I would love to find a place like that you have me thinking now about going to the Aveda Shop here and find out who does African American Hair.. Which treatment was she saying shouldn't be used all the time?

Letha - the Aveda Damage Remedy Reconstructor

Great review of the salon and stylist. That sounds like an awesome spot! I love that she said...if your hair is still breaking, don't relax until it's under control---now I hate to say this but many stylist of the darker skin persuassion seem to believe that relaxing IS the answer to shedding/breakage--and its not! It just isnt. As for the Aveda Damage Remedy Recon-its a great product. I agree with her it is not like most protein reconstructors. I love it! I have the entire line.I did a review on one of the hairboards a while back. Glad you had a wonderful experience....now you have a go to stylist for cuts/trims! : )
